How to Talk About Wills & Life Insurance Without It Feeling Awkward

Legacy week at Financielle is dedicated to helping you get the protection you and your loved ones deserve… but what about people that you care about who live outside of your household?

Parents, Aunts, Uncles, friends?

How do you bring up the topic of wills and protection cover without looking like a gold digger? It’s a hard balance, and 99% of the time, it’s coming from a good place, but due to countless horror stories of family disputes connected to wills, it’s no surprise we don’t want to rock the boat and look like ‘that’ person.

Recent data showed that contested wills increased 34% in the last 5 years, which could mean that people aren’t discussing wills and their plans prior to their death, leaving room for surprise, upset, uncertainty and disputes.

We’ve created some handy scripts to help you open up the conversation about protection and wills, ensuring you and your family have transparency, understanding and the right cover and documentation in place for when the time comes to say goodbye.

Wills

“I found out the other day that only 4 out of 10 adults have a will in the UK? I’ve just created/updated my will actually, do you have one set up?

If the answer is yes, you can reply with “When was the last time you updated it?”

This is especially important if they’ve gone through a separation or divorce, got married, had children or grandchildren, bought new property or come into an inheritance since creating their will the first time around.

If the answer is no, you could offer to help them set one up. Here’s a helpful blog you can share with them, showing them a positive experience of writing a will for the benefit of the family left behind.

And there’s no better time than now to write your will. Leading estate planners, Octopus Legacy has partnered with charities across the UK, so that you can write or update your will for free, until March 31st, 2025.

You can write your will online, over the phone or face-to-face.

The cost of the will is covered by whichever charity you choose – many choose to leave a gift to charity as a thank you, but it isn’t required.

Life Insurance

“I know this isn’t the most fun topic, but I’ve been thinking about how important it is to make sure we protect the people we love… have you ever thought about getting life insurance?”

Discussing life insurance can feel a bit… well, personal. If you have family and friends that;

  • Own a home
  • Rent a property
  • Have children or dependents

It could make sense for them to get protected. Whether it’s life insurance, income protection or critical illness cover.

Protection doesn’t just cover a mortgage or rent. You may want to protect;

1.Your lifestyle

If you like travelling as a family, going out to eat or invest a lot of time and money into your children’s hobbies such as dance or football, you’ll want to maintain this lifestyle should one of you pass away or become critically ill.

2. Your peace of mind

If you have monthly bills like a mortgage, rent, council tax, energy bills you’ll want peace of mind knowing these expenses would be covered should you not be able to work due to illness or injury.

Jumping straight to passing away as a reason for taking out life insurance can feel extreme so addressing the more common benefits of protection above can make the concept of life insurance and protection cover much more palatable for people.

We’ve partnered with our good friends at Lifesearch to help you find the right protection for you and your family.

If you’d like to talk it through with somebody we’ll try and connect you with a female advisor here.
