Students Push for Covid Compensation as Claims Expand to 36 More Universities

TL:DR

  • More than 170,000 students and graduates are now part of a growing Covid‑era compensation claim.
  • 36 additional universities have received legal letters after UCL reached a confidential settlement.
  • Claims argue students paid full fees for in‑person teaching but received online learning and limited access to facilities.
  • Want to join the claim? The deadline to join is September 2026.

A Wave of New Claims Hits UK Universities

A major legal challenge against UK universities has widened, with more than 170,000 students and graduates now seeking compensation for the disruption they faced during the Covid pandemic. After University College London (UCL) quietly settled its own case, a further 36 universities — including Bristol, Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester — have been told to expect claims.

The argument is pretty straightforward: students paid for an in‑person university experience, complete with teaching, facilities, placements and campus life. What they actually received was months of online learning, restricted access to buildings and, for many, a university experience that looked nothing like the one they signed up for.

Why Students Say They Deserve Compensation

During lockdowns, universities were required to move teaching online. Many students returned home, while others stayed in accommodation they were still paying for but couldn’t fully use. Libraries, studios, labs and specialist spaces were closed or heavily restricted.

For students on practical or creative courses — from fine art to engineering — the impact was particularly tough. Beyond the academic side, many felt they missed out on the social parts of university life: friendships, networks, placements and the confidence that comes from hands-on experience.

Graduation ceremonies were cancelled or delayed, and those finishing their degrees entered a job market still recovering from the pandemic.

What Universities Say

Universities UK, which represents more than 140 institutions, says the pandemic was an “unprecedented challenge” and that universities adapted “quickly and creatively” to help students complete their degrees.

UCL, which settled its case without admitting liability, has not disclosed the terms of the agreement.

This Comes on Top of Soaring Student Loan Balances

Many in the Financielle community are navigating the pressures of carrying high student loan debt – where despite paying off the loans regularly, balances are way higher than ever before.

Combining this with the less than satisfactory university experience – many feel they did not get value for money, nor did they get what was promised. The financial and emotional impact is still being felt — which is why the outcome of these claims could be significant.

What Happens Next?

There are 36 universities involved, with students seeking redress for the academic years 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22, with some courses still partly online into 2022–23.

The Student Group Claim argues that consumer law entitles students to compensation when services paid for aren’t delivered — comparing it to paying for a “five‑star holiday” and receiving a “one‑star” experience.

Students have until September 2026 to join the action, and with more universities now facing claims, this could become a defining moment for the higher‑education sector.
